Getting started

On first launch Setlist asks for your name, units and training goal. The goal sets default rep ranges, rest and weekly set targets, and you can change it any time in Settings.

Then either build a routine in Train, or import your history from another app and let Setlist rebuild your routines from it.

Bringing your history across

From Hevy. In Hevy: Profile, Settings, Export Data. You get workout_data.csv and measurement_data.csv. In Setlist: Settings, Import, and pick both files.

From Trainerize. Pick the export zip, or the unzipped folder. Setlist reads the workouts, body stats, training phases and program definitions. Phases that ended in the last sixty days or later become scheduled programs, and the one covering today becomes active.

By AirDrop. Send the CSV or zip to your iPhone and choose Setlist. It imports on arrival.

Through Files. Open Files, On My iPhone, Setlist, drop the files in, then use Settings, “Import from the Setlist folder in Files”.

Re-importing is safe. Workouts already present, matched on start time, are skipped.

iCloud sync

Settings shows either iCloud (synced) or This device only. If it says the latter, sign in to iCloud in iOS Settings and make sure iCloud Drive is on, then reopen Setlist.

Workouts, routines, programs and exercises sync. Body measurements do not: they stay on the device where you recorded them. If you use Apple Health for weight, Health syncs those readings across your own devices and Setlist picks them up on each one.

Each Apple Account is a separate, private store. Two people using Setlist never see each other’s data unless one invites the other as their trainer.

Apple Health

Settings, Apple Health, “Sync weight from Apple Health”.

Reading and writing are separate switches. Setlist reads body weight and body fat percentage only; if a scale already writes those to Health, its weigh-ins appear in Setlist’s Body tab on their own.

Saving workouts. Settings, Apple Health, “Save workouts to Apple Health”. Each session you finish is then saved as a strength-training workout, with an optional energy estimate. Deleting the workout in Setlist deletes the Health copy too. Setlist never writes your weight or body fat.

“No weight found in Apple Health.” Setlist is authorised but Health has nothing to give it. If you use a Withings scale: in the Withings app go to Profile, Settings, “Export health data to Apple Health”, turn on Weight and Body Fat Percentage, and pull down on the Withings Home tab once. Otherwise check Health, Profile, Apps, Setlist and confirm the two categories are on.

A weight you type into Setlist always wins for that day over one read from Health.

Your trainer

Inviting. Home, the ⋯ menu, Your trainer, Invite. Enter your trainer’s name and the phone number or email on their Apple Account, then send the message Setlist opens. Your trainer needs Setlist and an iCloud account.

“That number or email isn’t on an Apple Account.” Ask your trainer which address they use for iCloud (iOS Settings, their name) and try that one.

Stopping. Your trainer, “Stop sharing”. Programs your trainer sent stay in your Train tab.

For trainers. Accept the invitation from the link in Messages or Mail. Your clients appear in the Clients tab. One client is free; more clients need Setlist for Trainers, $9.99 a month or $99 a year, with a two-week free trial. It includes Setlist Pro, and your clients get Pro while you subscribe. Apple handles payment. Manage or cancel it in iOS Settings, your name, Subscriptions.

What your trainer sees and does not see is set out in the privacy policy. Body stats are never shared through iCloud; you send them yourself as a file in Messages.

Sharing a routine

On a routine or program in Train, or on the Finish screen, choose “Share routine” or “Share program” and send the link however you like. With Setlist, the link opens a preview with Add routine. Without it, the link shows the routine in the browser with a link to the App Store. If a link opens in Safari even though Setlist is installed, press and hold it and choose Open in Setlist.

Getting your data out

Settings, “Export workouts (CSV)” and “Export body data (CSV)”. One row per set and one row per body entry, opened by any spreadsheet. A single workout can also be exported from its own page in History.

Starting over

Settings, “Erase all data and start over” deletes every workout, routine, program and custom exercise on the device and in iCloud, and every body entry on the device, then restores the built-in exercise library. Your original export file is untouched, so you can import it again straight afterwards.

Export first if you logged anything that is not in that original file.

What Setlist does not do

  • iPhone only. No iPad app, no Apple Watch app.
  • No cardio or activity tracking.
  • No exercise demonstration video. Each exercise has written form cues, a muscle map, and a link that opens a YouTube search.
  • No social features. You can share with your own trainer, and send a routine to anyone as a link.
  • One workout in progress at a time. Starting another discards the first.

Reporting a problem

Use the form below. It helps to say what you were doing, what you expected, and what happened instead. If an import went wrong, say which app the file came from. Do not paste your training data in; it is yours and I do not need it to find a bug.

This is a small app maintained by one person. Expect a reply within a few days, not within the hour.

Your message and email address go to me by email so I can reply, and are not used for anything else. The form is handled by Netlify, which hosts this site.

Setlist is a training log, not medical advice. Check with a doctor before you start or change a training programme.
